SCCO Presents “The Carnival’s in Town” June 9 & 10!!

Sullivan County Chamber Orchestra will present the finale of its 2017-18 season: “The Carnival’s in Town,” on Saturday, June 9 at 7 pm at Monticello’s Nesin Theatre and Sunday, June 10 at 2 pm at Narrowsburg’s Tusten Theatre presented by Delaware Valley Arts Alliance.

The concert will feature Camille Saint-Saëns’ The Carnival of the Animals, one of the most recognizable pieces of the 19th century. This famous work includes fourteen playful movements that each sound like a different animal. SCCO will be joined by woodwinds and percussion, including two pianos, as they perform Saint-Saëns original score. Between each movement, children’s book author/illustrator Linda Kujawski will provide original narration.

SCCO will perform The Fantasy Creatures, a short collection of three miniatures for chamber orchestra composed by Nancy Wegrzyn, a longtime music educator and violist. Each movement of the collection depicts imaginary and mystical beings who come to life through musical interpretation.

Andrew Trombley, SCCO Artistic Director, will perform Jean Francaix’s Concerto for Double Bass, often considered to be a hidden gem of the double bass repertoire. While Françaix was born too late to join the “neo-classical” movement in 20th century France, he could not avoid becoming influenced by the style. Françaix recalled his inspiration for the concerto as a story from time spent in a railway station having seen an actress modeling for photographers while being wickedly mocked behind her by a round Bavarian woman.

The performance on Saturday, June 9 at 7 pm will take place at the Eugene D. Nesin Theatre for the Performing Arts, 22 St. John Street, Monticello, NY. Tickets are $20, $18 seniors, students free. Tickets may be purchased online or at the door. For questions, call 845-798-9006.
