SCCO Presents “Music in the Key of Love”

If you ask a musician why they program specific pieces and in a particular order, you’ll often hear a variety of responses; “This music is special to me,” “The story is incredible,” “The composition is genius!” A sentiment generally expressed is how the key signatures of each piece flow together. This is the foundation of the Sullivan County Chamber Orchestra’s (SCCO) October chamber music series, “Music in the Key of Love.”

The program will begin with Beethoven’s Duetto mit zwei obligatten for Viola & Cello. Beethoven composed this duet in the key of E-flat Major which has been described by German poet and composer, Christian Schubart (translated by Rita Steblin) as “The key of love, of devotion, of intimate conversation with God.” After Beethoven you will hear the music of a young Dvořák; his String Quintet in G Major. Schubart characterized this key as “Everything rustic, idyllic and lyrical, every calm and satisfied passion, every tender gratitude for true friendship and faithful love,–in a word every gentle and peaceful emotion of the heart is correctly expressed by this key.” The program will conclude with Brahms’ iconic masterwork, String Sextet in B-flat Major. The key of B-flat is described by Schubart as “Cheerful love, clear conscience, hope, and aspiration for a better world.” Collectively the keys of the program spell out an E-flat major chord, which brings us full circle to the feeling evoked at the top of the program with Beethoven; The Key of Love.

SCCO is thrilled to invite the incomparable violinist, Daniel Phillips (Orion Quartet) to share his love of music with Akiko Hosoi, Chelsea Wimmer, Chieh-Fan Yiu, Philo Keun-Ha Lee, and SCCO Artistic Director Andrew Trombley for two performances of Beethoven, Dvorak, and Brahms.
