SCCO Awarded Grant for New Work Commission!

Sullivan County Chamber Orchestra (SCCO) and Nesin Cultural Arts (NCA) have received a national grant from New Music USA to commission and record a new composition by Nancy Wegrzyn entitled Four Seasons of Sullivan County.

New Music USA is part of an international community of advocates for the arts. New Music USA is a member of the Performing Arts Alliance, International Association of Music Information Centres, & International Society of Contemporary Music. There were 1,114 applicants and only 108 projects were awarded. Current and past recipients include grammy-award winning vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth, Albany Symphony Orchestra, and Dover Quartet.

Composer Nancy Wegrzyn received her education at SUNY Fredonia and studied music composition with Drs. Walter S. Hartley and Donald Bohlen. She has been commissioned by the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, Delaware Valley Opera, Monticello Central School District, Fallsburg Central School District, American Virtuosi and Weekend of Chamber Music organizations. These commissions have included several “Meet the Composer” Grants from the NYS Council on the Arts. Wegrzyn is a performer as well, serving as principal viola of the Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra, Hudson Opera Theatre Orchestra, Sullivan County Chamber Orchestra, and Orange Classic Choral Society Orchestra.

SCCO & NCA have commissioned award-winning artist and Monticello native, Laurie Kilgore to collaborate with Nancy Wegrzyn to reflect upon the beauty of Sullivan County through a visual representation. Laurie has received recognition from the Puffin Foundation, Sullivan Renaissance, and a New York State Legislative award for her murals around Sullivan County.

Laurie will sketch and paint around Sullivan County throughout the upcoming seasons. The artistic process will be shared in presentations around Sullivan County throughout the year, culminating in a final presentation in June, 2019.

The concerts will include Vivaldi’s iconic violin concertos of the same name. Performances will be June 8th, 2019 at 7 PM and June 9th 2019 at 2 PM. The performance and prints will be available in a CD and booklet form to be enjoyed on loan around Sullivan County in the buildings of our supporters.

SCCO & NCA are seeking sponsors to assist in matching the New Music USA grant to help with the costs of commissioning the artwork by Laurie Kilgore.  If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, contact Marina Lombardi, General Manager at 845-798-9006 or
