Eugene D. Nesin Theater

The Eugene D. Nesin Theatre for the Performing Arts is located in the St. John Street Education Center, 22 St. John Street, Monticello, New York, which was the original Monticello High School built in 1894.  The theatre was added in 1930 under the administration of President Franklin Roosevelt as part of a federal project.  A plaque in the lobby reads, “Monticello Junior and Senior High School Federal Emergency Administration of Public Works Project No. 4963.”  The theatre is known for its beauty and fantastic acoustics.  It can accommodate 400 people.  One can still find original seating in the balcony.  The Monticello Central School District has recently replaced the window treatments as well as the carpeting.  Our next project is a new light board and stage floor.  It is our hope that the Nesin Theatre will develop into a center for the performing arts in Monticello and Sullivan County.
